DT – Focus: Structures/ Packaging Included: • Planning • Poster – Instructions for using a net • Worksheets • Target sheet (LO) The children investigate different types of familiar commercial packaging for cereal bars, finding out how they are made from disassembling them. They learn the parts of a net used to make a 3D shape and follow a set of instructions with a template to make a small package. They learn about layout for commercial uses and practise using different font sizes and styles. Children then design their own package specifically for cereal bars, list materials and equipment, illustrate the net they have used, and record their evaluation. These activities can be used as a follow up to DT – Food / Yummy Cereal Bars – or on their own. This is a great activity for children to learn how animals are grouped into different categories. The objective is to match each animal (pictures) under the correct group name (labels) – vertebrate, invertebrate, mammal, reptile, bird, fish, amphibian, and insect – and match its features (labels) - while cooperatively making decisions and discussing the different possibilities. A great whole class teaching activity or group activity – children use labels and pictures to sort minibeasts into insect or not insect, and match key features while cooperatively making decisions and discussing the different possibilities. Includes instructions, posters (text) to introduce Minibeasts, minibeasts pictures, group and features labels, recording worksheets and posters to check answers. The PowerPoint briefly describes the history of the Christmas tree and the differences between modern day Christmas trees. Part 1: describes the origins of the Christmas tree from Pagan celebrations to German traditions and why it became a worldwide custom since Victorian times. It shows some famous Christmas trees used for public display around the world. Part 2: describes present day production, sales and impact on the environment of Christmas trees, including real and artificial trees. Children are asked to make comparisons and to briefly describe which tree is better for appearance, cost, convenience, transportation, longevity, disposal, allergies and safety. It ends with reviewing how Christmas trees affect our environments and what people can do better to save them. The PowerPoint provides questions and answers to check the children’s understanding. DT / Food / Little Red Riding Hood This unit can be used alongside the story of Little Red Riding Hood. It provides opportunities for the children to use food technology to create a healthy food product suitable for the grandmother and link it to their storytelling. Included: • Planning • Eatwell Healthy Diet Posters • Sweet And Savoury Muffins - Picture Flashcards • Sensory Vocabulary - Posters + Labels • Worksheets • Target Sheet (LO) This unit develops children’s knowledge and understanding of the importance of healthy eating and the differences between sweet and savoury foods. They investigate and compare different flavoured muffins and describe the appearance, taste and texture of each muffin. They practice making sweet and savoury muffins following two different recipes. Once baked, the children compare the muffins tastes and textures. Using a tally chart, they find out which type of muffin is the most/least favourite in the class. After testing different ingredients that contribute to a healthy diet such as vegetables and pulses, the children then illustrate their own savoury muffins and choice of ingredients. They write instructions, list ingredients and equipment using a recipe template. They talk about their finished product, and record how it looks and how well it matches their original ideas. They use a basic template for making a paper pattern and follow illustrated instructions for creating a simple sample cloak. Children then design a new cloak for Little Red Riding Hood, illustrate how it will look and explain their choice of fabric, create a paper pattern, list the equipment for making the pattern and cloak, write instructions, and record their evaluation. Jack’s Bean Salad - DT activities This unit can be used alongside the story of jack and the Beanstalk. It provides opportunities for the children to use food technology to create a healthy food product suitable for a character and link it to their storytelling. Included: • Planning • Posters - text, pictures of various beans, recipes, sensory vocabulary • Worksheets • Target sheet (LO) These activities encourage children to investigate different types of beans through text and looking closely at a variety of real beans, and learn why beans are part of a healthy food diet. They use recipes to practice how to make different bean salads. They taste and describe the appearance, taste and texture of each salad, and find out which one everyone liked best using a tally chart. Children then design their own bean salad creating a new recipe, illustrating how their bean salad will look and taste, list ingredients and equipment, write in which order they will work using the recipe template, and record their evaluation. They can illustrate a poster about eating their salad, and write about Jack’s mother eating the bean salad. Gingerbread House - DT activities This unit can be used alongside the story of Hansel and Gretel. It provides opportunities for the children to use food technology to create a food product linked to their storytelling Included: • Planning • Posters – UK’s top 20 Biscuits, History of Gingerbread Houses, recipes, sensory vocabulary • Worksheets • Target sheet (LO) These activities encourage children to investigate different types of biscuits and find out the origins of the gingerbread house. They use recipes to practice how to make different biscuits. Then taste and describe the appearance, texture, smell and taste of each biscuit, and find out which one everyone liked best using a tally chart. Children practise how to make a house paper template and how to follow a recipe to create a gingerbread house. Then they design their own gingerbread house creating a new template, illustrating how their gingerbread house will look, list ingredients and equipment, write in which order they will work, and record their evaluation.
